Lithuanian place code
The five-digit code identifying a Lithuanian populated place in the address register kept by the Centre of Registers.
The Centre of Registers maintains the address register of Lithuania. The place code is its key for a populated place, whether a village, a town or a city, and the register holds about 26,000 of them including historical entries.
Five digits throughout, running from 10001 upward, so no padding question arises. The code is flat: it does not embed the municipality or the eldership, which have their own separate numbering.
The same name can appear under two codes with different types, so a name alone is not a key. Cedasai is both a village and a town, at two codes; Alytus likewise. Records carry validity dates and historical places stay in the file, so a current place is one whose end date is empty.
