ship guidance

A structure whose position or signals guide vessels through waterways or across bodies of water, especially a lighthouse.

Ship guidance applies to any structure which by its position and any signals it emits helps ships to navigate safely through waterways and across bodies of water. It is primarily assigned to lighthouses.

The structure can guide vessels through its location and through signals it emits. A lighthouse is the principal example rather than the only included form.

Water traffic control instead identifies a center where controllers manage traffic. A guidance marker does not become such a center merely by displaying navigational signals.
