chromium mine

A mine extracting natural chromium ore deposits, primarily the chromium-bearing mineral chromite.

A chromium mine is a site for the extraction of natural chromium ore deposits from the earth. The primary form of chromium ore is chromite (FeCr₂O₄). Chromium is a silvery metal and a chemical element with atomic number 24. It is used both in the production of stainless steel and in electroplating.

Chromite is the principal ore source. The mine extracts the natural deposit rather than producing a finished chromium coating.

Stainless-steel manufacture and electroplating are later uses of the recovered metal. A facility carrying out only those activities is not a chromium mine.
