Research and educational institutions are groups and organizations which specialize in increasing knowledge, either through teaching or by conducting systematic investigations in particular fields.

The institution can teach students or concentrate on research. A research establishment remains within this field even when it does not offer ordinary school classes.

The more specific roles distinguish universities from schools below college level and from supplementary adult education. Research establishments are also distinguished from universities that combine research with teaching.
