Mineral wool rigid panels are hard or stiff sheets made of fibers derived from rocks, such as basalt or diabase, or from iron ore slag. They are flame resistant and are used for both thermal and acoustic insulation.
The material is formed into firm sheets. Rock-derived fibers and slag-derived fibers are both included, unlike fiberglass panels, whose fibers come from glass.
The panels can serve thermal and acoustic functions in the same assembly. Their thermal rating depends on the board and its thickness rather than on the name mineral wool alone.
