rail traffic control

A tower, post, or other operational space where controllers monitor and direct railroad traffic.

A rail control center is a tower, post, or other space where rail traffic is monitored and controlled. Controllers in these locations optimize the flow of rail traffic and prevent accidents and misroutings. This should not be confused with a rail traffic signal, which is an unmanned or remote-controlled sign and is much more common along a rail route than a control tower or control post.

Controllers use the site to manage train movements and routes. A tower is one possible form rather than a necessary building type.

A rail signal can relay a command without being a control center. The distinction is the operational monitoring and control activity at the site.
