A canteen is a shared dining space, often including a food vendor and/or vending machines, which is intended mainly as an amenity for the tenants of a building rather than being set up as a business catering to the outside public.

The dining space is shared and intended mainly for tenants of the building. A food vendor or vending machines can accompany it, but neither form of food supply is required in every canteen.

A food court groups several take-out providers around common seating. The canteen is distinguished by its tenant-amenity purpose, rather than by an operation established mainly to serve the outside public.
