A retirement home is an independent living facility for persons of advanced age with medical or nursing staff available on the premises. It does not feature intensive supervision or round-the-clock care as offered at a nursing home.

Residents live independently while medical or nursing staff are available on site. The care is supplied as needed within the residential arrangement.

Nursing homes provide continuous supervision or availability of care. Senior apartments retain the separate scope without on-site medical care.
