postal division
Delivery areas of a postal operator, cut for routes rather than for places.
A postal division is a division whose areas organize mail delivery. The postal operator defines them, keys them to a code, and changes them when delivery volume or routing changes.
Their boundaries follow delivery rounds, so an area may cover parts of several quarters, stop halfway along a street, or reach across a municipal boundary. A large building or a single organization may hold a code of its own with no territory at all.
Residents use the code as an address component and sometimes as a rough name for where they live, which makes it look administrative. Nothing is administered for a postal area and no municipality maintains it.
