map

An abstracted diagram of land features or built spaces, including floor plans.

A map is an abstracted diagram of a horizontal or topographically varied surface. As a data source maps vary significantly in suitability for citation, depending also on the type of data collected. Measured distances may sometimes be ascertained from maps if the diagrams are known to be precisely scaled.

The map represents the arrangement of features on a surface, including the built spaces shown by a floor plan. The depicted relationships can be useful even when the drawing is unsuitable for precise distance measurement.

A distance taken from the graphic requires known, sufficiently precise scaling. A schematic arrangement is not itself a measured distance, and the suitability of the map depends on the particular fact being cited.
