truss bridge

A bridge whose span is carried by a connected truss framework with members acting in tension and compression.

A truss bridge is a bridge whose span is carried by means of a truss, or a network of connected beams reaching across the span with the deck, whose members carry loads primarily through tension and compression and transfer them to the supports.

The connected members distribute loads through the truss to the supports. Some members resist pulling forces, while others resist compression.

The truss carries the span as a structural network. The form is distinct from a single beam resting between its end supports, even when both bridges have a similar deck.
