Juliet balconies are decorative or protective railings in front of the lower part of an outside-facing doorway or window on the upper floors of a building. They appear similar to balconies but do not include any outdoor extension with enough room to step outside. Their purpose, when not solely ornamental, is to provide a secure restraint from falling out when occupants open a doorway (higher than ground level) for fresh air.

A railing qualifies without a platform large enough for a person to stand outside. The distinction from an ordinary balcony is usable outdoor standing space rather than the railing's ornamental style.

The feature belongs to an upper-floor opening. Its protective role can accompany its decorative role, but a solely ornamental railing in that position is also included.
