coal-burning power plant

Related terms: coal-fired thermal power station · coal-fired power station · coal-fired thermal power plant

A facility that generates electricity by converting energy released through coal combustion.

A coal-burning power plant is a place where electric power is generated by harnessing the energy of coal combustion. It is one of the most common forms of large-scale power generation worldwide.

The plant burns coal as an energy source for electricity generation. Coal extraction and storage are separate activities that do not themselves establish a power plant.

A facility using coal only to supply heat has a different output from the electrical generation described here. The defining fuel also distinguishes this use from wood-, oil-, and gas-burning plants.
