Australian LGA code
The five-digit ASGS identifier for an Australian Local Government Area, beginning with its state or territory digit.
Local Government Areas generally represent areas administered by incorporated local governing bodies. The ASGS Edition 3 classification lists 567 areas and balancing entries, including unincorporated areas, to cover Australia. The Australian Capital Territory has no incorporated local government, but the statistical classification includes Unincorporated ACT.
Five digits: the state or territory digit followed by a four-digit identifier. Adelaide is 40070, where the leading 4 is South Australia. Codes for Local Government Areas end in zero; special-purpose balancing codes use other forms.
The codes are tied to their edition of the standard. The Bureau states that where significant boundary changes have occurred, codes may not match those used in earlier editions, so a code taken from an older dataset is worth checking rather than trusting.
