flooring material

Related terms: ground material

The substance and form applied to the floors throughout a structure or a module.

The flooring material of a structure describes both the substance and the form of application in the floor space of a structure. Because certain materials lend themselves to tile or sheet or other forms of installation, both form and content are included in this data field.

When applied to a whole structure, the flooring material refers to a typical material found in the structure's usable floor space. When applied to a module, it may refer more specifically to certain areas within, whether or not they belong to the usable floor area.

A material recorded for a whole structure need not occur in every room. A module can identify a particular surface more precisely, including a surface outside usable floor area. The material and its installation form should describe that selected extent, without treating an isolated finish as typical of the whole structure.
