number of elevators

The total number of passenger, freight, and vehicle elevators within a structure.

The number of elevators in a building equals the number of elevator cabs within the limits of the main structure (as defined under volume). These include all passenger, freight, and vehicle elevators which rise between any two or more floors. Dumbwaiters and vertical conveyor belts (manlifts) are not included. Cabs with multiple levels joined together count as single elevators.

Count individual cabs within the main structure. A cab serving many floors still contributes one elevator, while a cab with several joined levels also contributes only one.

Passenger, freight, and vehicle cabs belong in this total when they connect two or more floors. Dumbwaiters and vertical conveyor-belt manlifts remain outside it, even though they also provide vertical transport.
