hazardous waste collection

A site collecting, storing, or sorting waste that poses an environmental or health hazard.

A hazardous waste collection site is a place where garbage and other waste which poses an environmental or health hazard is collected, stored, and/or sorted. It may be open to the public for deposit of wastes, or limited to the exclusive access of professionals.

Hazardous waste includes biologically hazardous materials such as medical waste containing blood or disease agents; chemical waste containing toxins, heavy metals, oils, and/or flammable substances; electronics or fluorescent bulbs which may contain toxic materials; or radioactive waste.

The facility can serve the public or be restricted to professionals. Collection, storage, and sorting need not all occur at every site; the hazardous nature of the waste distinguishes it from regular-garbage collection.
