average room depth
The average distance across rooms in a building, measured from the perimeter inward.
The average room depth of a building is the average distance from the windows or perimeter wall to the opposite end of the room. This is used mainly for buildings with regular interior spaces which are either modular or divisible, such as offices and hotels.
This figure is important as an indicator of sustainable energy use, as buildings with a lower average room depth depend less on artificial lighting (and therefore tend t7065021023o use less energy). Calculations of benefits, however, must also include short and long column grid length, ceiling height, and window-to-wall ratio as factors.
The simple formula for deriving the room depth is the building width minus the corridor width minus the wall thickness. However this calculation may be complicated by the building's floor plan (e.g. the presence of interior rooms).
