Assisted living facilities are forms of group housing in which the residents are cared for by a staff of professionals. The type and reasons for care may vary considerably.
Professional care is part of the living arrangement. Shared housing with no staff caring for its residents does not become assisted living simply because residents help one another.
The reason for care can vary. A nursing home provides continuous availability of medical or nursing attention, while other assisted-living forms have different supervision needs.
