planning region
One of nine Connecticut planning areas represented by regional councils and recognized as Census Bureau county equivalents.
A planning region is one of the nine areas Connecticut uses at county level. They replaced the state's eight counties as Census Bureau county equivalents in 2022, after the counties had been without government since 1960.
The US Census Bureau adopted the planning regions as county equivalents and issued new codes for them. Their boundaries differ from those of the former counties, so comparisons across the change require attention to the geographic units used.
Each planning region is represented by a council of governments made up of municipal leaders who coordinate matters of shared interest. Census recognition followed these existing regional arrangements; it did not establish a new county government.
