number of horizontal autowalks

Related terms: number of moving walkways

The total number of mechanized moving walkways with no vertical rise in a structure or area.

The number of horizontal autowalks in a structure or area is the total of all mechanized belts or pathways in that same structure or area which carry persons along a continuous walkable surface with no vertical rise. They are most commonly used in airports, transit centers, and large shopping or multi-use centers.

The moving surface must be continuous and walkable. It carries passengers horizontally rather than between different elevations.

A moving walkway with a noticeable rise or descent belongs to the inclined-autowalk count. The horizontal count is not limited to airports or shopping centers.
