salt mine

A mine extracting naturally occurring halite, or rock salt, from deposits within the earth.

A salt mine is a site for the extraction of natural halite (rock salt) deposits from the earth. Salt is commonly used as a food additive for flavoring.

The material is natural rock salt. Its eventual use as food seasoning does not require the mine itself to package salt for retail sale.

Salt refining, storage, or sale alone is different from extraction of a halite deposit. The source and extraction activity establish this use.
