labeling

Signs or objects identifying or calling attention to something in their immediate vicinity.

Labels are objects which identify or call attention to other objects in close proximity to themselves, in such a way that the connection between the signifying object and the signified object is very clear. These include various forms of signage and logos. Signs which advertise objects simply by calling attention to their immediate presence are considered labeling rather than advertisements.

The relationship between the sign and nearby subject is clear. A logo can label the premises where its organization is present, without depicting the building itself.

An advertisement promotes something separate from the immediate identification. Calling attention to an object's nearby presence is labeling even when that attention also benefits it commercially.
