swing bridge
A movable bridge with a span that turns horizontally about a fixed pivot at its center or one end.
A swing bridge is a movable bridge whose deck spins around on a turning point (usually at its center but sometimes at one end), allowing traffic to move past it. When the pivot is located in the center, it creates open channels on both sides. This is a relatively common type of movable bridge.
Very often a long bridge with multiple spans will contain one swing span; this is sufficient for the bridge to be classified as a swing bridge.
The opening movement is horizontal rotation about the pivot. Only one span needs to swing for a larger multi-span bridge to receive this classification; the other spans can remain fixed.
