number of studio units

Related terms: number of efficiency units

The number of residential units without separate bedrooms, even when other rooms are enclosed.

The number of studio units in a building or module is the total quantity of residential units in that object which lack distinct bedroom spaces. Such units are generally smaller than units with bedrooms, and occupants normally set up their sleeping quarters alongside living and dining quarters.

Studios are not necessarily single-room units. They usually have distinct bathrooms, and often distinct kitchens, storage rooms, utility rooms, hallways, and foyers.

An enclosed kitchen or bathroom does not make a unit a one-bedroom residence. The distinction depends on whether the sleeping space is a separate bedroom, so room count alone cannot identify a studio.
