A hut is an extremely small single-story building which is usually built without a deep foundation, and which can occupy spaces like parks and street medians that normally do not allow buildings. Very often they are used as kiosks or gatehouses, and have an outside-facing service window.

The small enclosure can provide a service position rather than a full-sized residence. An outward-facing window is common in kiosk and gatehouse uses.

A deep foundation is usually absent, allowing placement in small sites such as medians or parks. This is a usual construction characteristic rather than an absolute foundation rule.
