elevator inspection
An official review of a structure's elevators by the governmental authority responsible for code compliance.
An elevator inspection is a review of the elevators within a structure by an official agency or representative of a local or regional government, or of whichever governmental body is responsible for overseeing code compliance in the particular area. When the elevators in a structure pass such an inspection, normally a certificate is given out to certify the safety and code compliance of the elevators; this may or may not be posted or noted within the elevators.
The review is carried out by the responsible governmental authority or its representative. It is distinct from routine maintenance performed by the elevator service company.
A certificate commonly follows a successful inspection, but posting it inside the cab is optional in this definition. The inspection event does not itself mean that the elevators passed.
