asbestos shingles
A roof covering of small overlapping asbestos-containing shingles, typically made from asbestos cement.
Asbestos shingle roofing is made from several small, overlapping plates of asbestos-containing material, typically asbestos cement; asbestos is a group of fibrous silicate minerals with high heat resistance. It is rarely used anymore on account of the health hazards posed by asbestos when it is disturbed and fibers from it are inhaled.
The asbestos fibers are incorporated into the roofing product, typically in a cement matrix. The shingles are discrete units arranged in overlapping courses.
Asbestos sheeting uses larger panels instead of small shingles. The asbestos-containing composition distinguishes this material from otherwise similar shingles made without asbestos.
