automated teller machine

Related terms: atm

A machine where banking customers can withdraw money and perform other banking transactions.

An automated teller machine (ATM) is a computerized banking machine tied to a communications network and stocked with cash so that users can perform banking transactions on it, such as withdrawing money, depositing cash and checks, making transfers, etc. Some ATMs are limited to cash withdrawals and do not provide other services.

ATMs are very often found in bank branches, supermarkets, drugstores, hotels, transportation hubs, hospitals, and shopping centers, or in just about any commercial area or heavily trafficked location.

Cash withdrawal alone is sufficient for the machine to qualify; deposits and transfers are possible additional services. A machine's location in a bank or another type of building does not change this banking function.
