zinc mine

A mine extracting natural zinc ore deposits, commonly containing the mineral sphalerite.

A zinc mine is a site for the extraction of natural zinc ore deposits from the earth. The most common zinc ore is sphalerite. Zinc is a silver-colored metallic chemical element with atomic number 30. It is commonly used in metal plating and in batteries, and is also a main component of brass.

Sphalerite is the most common ore source, but the mining use is defined by zinc extraction rather than that mineral alone.

Plating, battery manufacture, and brass production use zinc after recovery. Those activities do not establish a zinc mine without extraction of a natural deposit.
