vacuum insulated panels

Constructed panels containing a protected vacuum layer for thermal insulation.

Vacuum insulated panels are a form of thermal insulation built to maintain an evacuated region inside a sealed panel. They provide high thermal resistance in a thin section, but can lose insulating performance as gas gradually enters through the envelope and seals.

A gas-tight envelope protects an evacuated porous core. The low gas pressure reduces heat transfer within the panel, while the core supports the envelope against atmospheric pressure.

The panel depends on the condition of its envelope and seals. Gradual gas entry reduces the benefit of the vacuum, so its performance cannot be inferred from thickness alone.
