private database

A collection of data which is maintained and issued by a non-governmental entity.

A private database is a collection of figures or information which is provided by a non-governmental institution, organization, company, person, or other entity, especially a cultural, academic, or professional organization. These include universities, professional associations, historical societies, and similar sources.

The providing entity is nongovernmental. Private in this definition identifies that organizational source; a collection can be made publicly available and still come from a private institution or organization.

A government database is provided under governmental authority. A university or professional association fits the private-database description when it meets the stated nongovernmental condition, not solely because it has that institutional name.
