Elevated walkways that provide maintenance access to high, remote, or otherwise difficult-to-reach places.
Maintenance catwalks are elevated walkways which provide access to high or out-of-the-way places.
The walkway provides a surface on which maintenance personnel can move to the place requiring access. Its elevated position and access purpose identify the feature even when it is away from the main occupied floors.
An external ladder provides climbing holds instead of a walkway. A catwalk can lead to a ladder, but the two terms identify different parts of the access route.
