An engineering research facility is a place where knowledge about engineering applications is advanced through various forms of research. These facilities are very often funded or managed by militaries or governments, but can also fall under corporations, academic institutions, or other organizations.

The work investigates engineering applications. Government or military management is common, but corporate and academic research facilities can perform the same kind of inquiry.

An engineering school provides teaching, while an engineering office can apply established knowledge to a project. Neither activity alone is research into engineering applications.
