disaster memorial

A site or object dedicated in memory of a major accident or a natural disaster.

A disaster memorial is a place, structure, building, or marker designated as a reminder of a past disaster of some kind, including natural disasters and any kind of accident resulting in significant harm.

The memorial concerns a disaster or harmful accident that has already occurred. It can recall a natural event as well as an accident resulting from human activity.

A marker recording an ordinary historical event has a different subject. A protective structure built only to prevent a future disaster is not thereby a memorial to one.
