partly open roof

A roof which does not cover the whole upper level, leaving an area enclosed by walls but open to the sky.

A partly open roof is a roof of any shape which does not extend over the entire perimeter of a building, thus leaving a section surrounded by walls which is open to the sky. This feature allows for the fact that the lower floor of the open space can technically be considered an extension of the roof.

The uncovered section lies within the surrounding walls and remains open to the sky. Its lower surface may form part of the roof over rooms below, so a lower roof surface does not remove the opening at the upper level.

A retractable roof is defined by the ability to move a major roof section. A partly open roof describes the incomplete overhead coverage; it does not require a moving mechanism.
