A marquee is an overhanging canopy on the facade of a structure, usually over the entrance, used for advertising entertainment or services inside that structure. Marquees often feature flashing lights, neon accents, and back-lit signboards with space for removable lettering. They are most commonly used on theaters and cinemas, but can also be found occasionally on casinos, hotels, restaurants, and other venues.
The sign-bearing canopy projects from the facade and advertises an activity or service in the structure. Its use is not confined to theaters, and flashing lights or removable letters are common details rather than required equipment.
An entrance canopy provides shelter at a pedestrian entrance. The advertising function distinguishes a marquee from a plain shelter, while a sign without a projecting canopy does not have the arrangement described here.
