NZ territorial authority
The three-digit code identifying a New Zealand territorial authority in the statistical standard for geographic areas kept by Stats NZ.
A territorial authority is the council tier below the region. There are 67: twelve city councils, 53 district councils, Auckland Council and Chatham Islands Council.
Three digits with the leading zero significant, numbered roughly north to south. Far North District, the northernmost, is 001; Ashburton District in the mid South Island is 063; Auckland is 076. Area Outside Territorial Authority is 999.
Two councils are structurally unusual rather than unusual in their code. Auckland is a unitary authority holding both territorial and regional powers, and Chatham Islands Council has an ordinary territorial code but belongs to no region.
