rental area

The cumulative built floor area available for rental or lease, including vacant space and excluding shared common areas.

The rental area of a built object is the amount of its built surface area, added cumulatively over all floor levels, which can be rented or leased to tenants or other occupants.

This includes vacant space as well as space currently rented or leased. It does not include common areas such as lobbies or hallways shared by multiple tenants. The figure is a component of both gross floor area and usable floor area. Rental area is a synonym for lettable area.

An area is only comparable alongside the standard it was measured to. National measuring codes differ over balconies, atrium voids and shafts, so two published figures for one building can both be correct.

A figure that covers a complex rather than a single building is a different measurement again. Where a tower shares a podium, the record has to say whether the podium is inside the figure.
