air traffic control
Space for aviation controllers to monitor airport traffic and to direct take-offs and landings.
Air traffic control is applied to the activity which takes place in airport control towers and similar operational centers, where highly trained specialists direct traffic into, out of, and around an airfield.
This should not be confused with an aircraft traffic signal, which is merely a sign or set of lights used for directing aircraft traffic.
The use identifies the operational space where controllers direct aircraft movements. A tower is a common form, but similar operational centers are included without requiring that shape.
