lightning protection

Related terms: lightning rods · lightning conduits

Special rods and pathways to channel lightning and protect a structure from a strike.

Lightning protection refers to a system of electrically conductive rods or other conduits which are positioned on a structure to receive any lightning strikes which may occur and direct the electricity into the ground. There must be a continuous conductive route between the lightning rods and their grounding which does not direct dangerous flows of electricity into the building's structure, interior, or mechanical systems.

The protection requires a continuous conductive route from the receiving elements to their grounding. An isolated rod without that path does not establish the system.

The route carries strike current away from the interior and mechanical systems. The definition identifies the installed protection rather than a guarantee that lightning cannot strike the structure.
