Facade elements cast from molten gray iron or related iron alloys, often molded into decorative architectural forms.
A cast iron facade is constructed of heat-molded gray iron or iron alloys. It can be molded into architectural forms and painted, but is susceptible to rust. Compared to steel it is very brittle and lacks tensile strength. It was widely used in some 19th-century commercial districts, but is no longer a common facade material in most places.
Molten metal takes the shape of the mold, allowing repeated architectural elements. The resulting cast pieces can be assembled into a facade.
Cast iron can rust when exposed to moisture and oxygen. Protective finishes and the condition of the metal affect the durability of an exposed facade.
