Turkish UAVT place code
The code identifying a Turkish settlement in the national address database, kept by the population and citizenship authority.
The national address database was built by TUIK and transferred in 2006 to the population and citizenship directorate of the Ministry of the Interior, which maintains it today.
The settlement number is a plain sequence rather than a fixed-width code, running from one to six digits with no padding and no segments. It does not embed the province or the district, so it carries no hierarchy: the chain of province, district and settlement has to be kept alongside it.
The ten-digit code often called a UAVT code is a different thing, identifying a building or a dwelling rather than a settlement, and does not belong in this field.
Settlement names repeat constantly across Turkey, with Merkez the most common of all, so the number is the only way to tell two apart.
