illumination
An object, place, or site whose function is to cast light on the surrounding area or some particular object nearby.
Illumination is a usage assigned to any object or site whose primary purpose is to cast or shine light on a surrounding area or nearby object. The light can be targeted or diffuse; it is usually produced artificially using electrical devices, such as halogen lights, incandescent lights, LED lights, etc.
Casting light is the object's principal function. The illumination can address one particular object or spread over the surrounding area.
The light-producing method is separate from that purpose. Different electrical lighting technologies can provide the same targeted or diffuse illumination.
