eps masonry unit

Related terms: extended polystyrene masonry unit

A load-bearing framework assembled from individual blocks of expanded polystyrene foam plastic.

An EPS (expanded polystyrene) masonry unit frame is a load-bearing supporting structure for a building or other built object, which is composed of many individual blocks of foam plastic. EPS is much lighter than other masonry units, and is an excellent insulator.

The individual EPS blocks form the supporting material. Their foam structure distinguishes them from stone or concrete masonry units.

The definition concerns the load-bearing role of the blocks. Foam used only as insulation or as formwork around a separate concrete frame does not have that stated structural role.
