raion

A raion is an administrative district in a country whose official or transliterated terminology uses that term.

It can subdivide a region or another primary territory, and some cities also contain urban raions. The parent tier and governing institutions depend on the national administrative structure.

District is the usual English generic equivalent. Retaining the term raion distinguishes the official local class without assigning it a universal rank.
