university chapel

A house of worship directly belonging to a university, whether affiliated with a particular faith or open to several.

A university chapel is a house of prayer or worship that is directly affiliated with a university. It may belong to a particular religion or denomination, particularly if the university itself is affiliated with that faith, or it may be open to persons of any religion.

This does not include houses of worship in or near a university, which serve the university community but are not directly part of the university itself. Usually a single university campus will have just one chapel, and often several houses of worship belonging to different faiths nearby, including some aimed especially at the students and employees of that institution.

In traditional Christian usage, the term "chapel" refers to a church that does not have the full rights of a parish church but where Eucharistic service can be celebrated. This is generally the case for any Christian chapel at a university.
