pasture

A distinct area of grasses or herbaceous plants kept open for grazing by animals.

A pasture is a grassland or field of herbaceous plants kept open for grazing by animals. The animals feeding in a pasture may be raised for meat, wool, milk, racing, riding, exhibition, or as draft animals. A pasture is generally a semi-controlled environment; it may or may not be naturally open, but should be delineated and kept free for the animals' use by humans.

People keep the area available for grazing, even where it was naturally open. The animals need not be raised for meat or milk; the stated uses also include riding, exhibition, and work.

The grazing use distinguishes pasture from a purely ornamental lawn. The grasses or herbaceous plants serve the feeding of animals within the managed area.
