A genocide memorial or holocaust memorial is a place, monument, plaque, sculpture, fountain, building, or other structure whose purpose is to recall the memory or historical awareness of a major regional campaign of ethnic or other type of exclusionary murder, in which a group of persons is singled out for their heritage.

The memorial recalls a campaign in which a group was singled out for its heritage. Its subject is that targeted campaign and the people affected by it.

The setting can be a marker or an entire building. A general war memorial need not concern such a campaign, even when both memorials relate to events in the same war.
