escalator vertical rise

The difference in height between the step levels at the lower and upper ends of an escalator.

The vertical rise of an escalator is the difference in height between the step level at its lower end and the step level at its higher end. This measurement is recorded in units of length, and differs from the angle of an escalator, which is measured in degrees. This field may be applied to a structure or to another defined area only if all of its escalators have the same vertical rise.

The vertical rise describes an individual installation. For a structure or area containing several escalators, the common value applies only when every installation has the same vertical rise.

A maximum or average of differing measurements does not express that common value. Replacing an installation with one having a different vertical rise removes the condition of equality stated above.
